Christmas Decorations by Artists of Warlukurlangu, Yuendumu
In 2016 Koskela commissioned a series of vibrant hand-painted Christmas decorations by artists of Warlukurlangu, Yuendumu. Our aim was to create something Australian made that was not just beautiful but would also become part of your Christmas tradition.
Finished with natural leather ties, each Christmas decoration is a unique one-off and individually handpainted by the artists. With shapes ranging from the traditional silhouettes such as circle baubles, bell, star & angel to cute Australian native animals; a Bilby, Kangaroo and Echidna.Koskela is never prescriptive when commissioning work, which allows artist to indulge in full artistic freedom creating work that is culturally authentic.
Warlukurlangu Art Centre is a not-for-profit organisation that is 100% Aboriginal-owned by artists from the remote desert communities of Yuendumu and Nyirripi in Central Australia.
Warlukurlangu means 'belonging to fire' in the local language Warlpiri, and is named for a fire dreaming site west of Yuendumu.
As with all Koskela products each decoration was proudly Australian made; how great to know that through decorating your Christmas tree you can also support an Indigenous community. Now that’s the true meaning of Christmas!
