Our Journey To Circularity
In 2023, we have embarked on a journey to become a fully circular business by 2027. That means nothing we make will be wasted. Everything will be repairable, reusable or – as a last resort – recyclable.
The Fast Furniture Issue
Australia's waste habits
We all need places to sit, eat, work and play. But, while furniture used to be made to last a lifetime, in recent decades there’s been a decrease in overall quality and an increase in perceived disposability. Much like the rise of ‘fast fashion’, there’s been a sharp increase in ‘fast furniture’, too. All of this comes at the expense of the planet.
It’s estimated that the amount of furniture dumped in Sydney’s landfills every year is the equivalent of 800,000 three-seater sofas, 1.65 million dining tables, 3.5 million coffee tables or 6.852 million chairs.
Fully Circular by 2027
We believe that as originators of products, we have a responsibility to make sure those products have as minimal an impact on the Earth as possible. In fact, our ultimate vision is to be able to create furniture that actually helps regenerate the Earth. Which is why we’re committing to go fully circular by 2027.
To achieve our bold ambition, we have mapped out clear and immediate actions against all 3 key principles of Circularity
Eliminate waste and pollution
From design stage, to the materials we chose, our production processes and the way our business operates on the day to day, we look at alternative ways to progressively eliminate the resources we draw from the earth, and the pollution we create.
Circulate products at their highest value possible
The best thing we can do as we bring new products into the world, is ensuring the maximum durability of our furniture and look after their full lifespan. We will do this through repairability and innovative circular services.
Regenerate natural systems
Keeping products and materials in use, while eliminating progressively the extraction of virgin material, is the main way we can allow for the land and soil to regenerate.
Removable Sofa Covers
Celebrating our first Circularity milestone
Embracing our Circular Action Plan, in January 2024 we've successful integrated removable covers in our entire sofa range, a key step towards achieving full circularity by 2027.
This design feature not only enhances durability but also substantially reduces our carbon footprint. Opting for a cover change instead of a new sofa results in an impressive 83.9% carbon reduction for Quadrant Soft Single and a 55.3% reduction for Classic sofas.
In the loop - Our 2027 Circularity Action Plan
In an inaugural Circularity Action Plan, we’ve articulated Koskela’s ambition to become a fully circular business by 2027. This means that nothing we make will ever end up in landfill. By 2027, all furniture that we produce will be repairable, reusable, or at the very last resort, recyclable.
If you want to know more, we invite you to read this document that outlines what we plan to do this year to move us to our 2027 goal. We’ll track and report back on our progress annually, and hope that other organisations can use our circularity journey as a blueprint for their own.
Koskela is committed to a future that allows for human flourishing within our ecological boundaries. This is the beginning of our journey to circularity, and we thank you for being part of the change.
This planet is in crisis, and it’s up to all of us to help usher in a new way of living, being and working – one that is in step with nature and allows humanity to thrive
