Custom Furniture & Bespoke Design

Koskela designs, makes and installs custom furniture for schools, universities, TAFEs and other education buildings. We know standard furniture often doesn't suit learning spaces, which need to work for different ages, teaching styles and accessibility needs, and to keep working as they change.

We're an Australian company that makes its furniture locally, so our own team looks after each project from the brief through to installation.

Customisation

Many Koskela products can be customised to suit a school or campus.

We design in-house and make our furniture locally, so we can change many of our standard pieces without starting from scratch. You keep the quality and character of a Koskela design, and it fits your rooms, your students and the way you teach.

Common customisations include:

  • Adjusting heights and dimensions for different age groups
  • Choosing hard-wearing materials and finishes suited to high-traffic spaces
  • Custom powder coat colours or upholstery to match school or campus branding
  • Custom graphics and artwork
  • Adding power, castors or accessibility features
  • Adapting furniture for classrooms, libraries and awkward spaces

Customising works well in schools and campuses, where layouts, compliance requirements and student needs often don't match standard furniture sizes.

Bespoke

Sometimes a standard product won't do the job.

Our bespoke design service is for education projects that need fully custom furniture because of their scale, their complexity or the space itself.

We've been designing and making furniture in Australia for more than two decades. Our team works with architects, interior designers, facilities managers and school building committees to create furniture that fits the building.

Bespoke education projects often include:

  • Library and learning commons furniture
  • Flexible classroom and collaboration tables
  • Study booths and quiet learning pods
  • Built-in seating and joinery for student hubs
  • Staff room and administration furniture
  • Site-specific furniture for performing arts, cultural or outdoor learning spaces

Our industrial design team develops the concept and production drawings, and our network of local manufacturers builds the furniture. We then coordinate installation with your builders and project team, working around the school term where needed.

First Nations Design Facilitation

Koskela also offers First Nations Design Facilitation, helping schools and universities bring First Nations perspectives, created with the artists themselves, into their learning spaces.

For more than a decade, we've worked with First Nations artists, art centres and collectives on design projects that reflect place, culture and community.

We act as the link between your school or university, your designers and the artists, and we make sure the process respects the artists' culture and delivers what the project needs.

Our facilitation can include:

  • Interpreting the project brief and site context
  • Recommending suitable mediums or design approaches
  • Finding and engaging suitable artists or art centres
  • Managing contracts and making sure artists are treated ethically
  • Working with artists to turn concepts into finished pieces
  • Documenting the story and process behind the work

These projects can acknowledge Country, support your school's Reconciliation Action Plan or Narragunnawali commitments, and create culturally safe spaces where students can learn about the Country they learn on.

Our Process

We work with schools, universities and their design teams to deliver furniture that looks right and does the job.

1. Brief

We start by understanding your project: how the space will be used, who will use it, any site constraints and your design intent. This might involve reviewing drawings, discussing materials, or working out whether customising a Koskela product or a bespoke design is the better approach.

2. Concept Development

Our industrial design team develops concepts that respond to the brief. This stage can include sketches, material samples and early technical drawings.

3. Design & Documentation

Once the direction is agreed, we prepare detailed drawings and specifications so the furniture can be made efficiently and works as intended in a busy learning space.

4. Manufacture

Your furniture is made by Koskela's network of trusted Australian manufacturers, which lets us work closely with them and control quality.

5. Delivery & Installation

We work with builders and project managers on delivery and installation, and plan around term dates and school holidays wherever possible.

Custom Projects & Case Studies

Koskela has delivered hundreds of projects across Australia for leading organisations, working closely with architects and interior designers to develop customised and bespoke furniture solutions.

The projects below showcase some of the ways our design team and local manufacturing partners have adapted, customised or developed furniture to suit specific spaces and project briefs.

Boardroom

Koskela has delivered boardroom tables with a high level of specification for clients such as Macquarie Bank, Ausgrid and Dexus. We can facilitate the creation of an original boardroom table that is only limited by your imagination. Alternatively, you can customise one of Koskela’s standard tables to suit.

A Koskela boardroom table looks to embody an organisation’s identity in its design and materiality, while seamlessly integrating the latest technology requirements.

Breakout tables

Breakout areas require a high level of flexibility for different sized groups to configure according to their needs. And tables are usually the focal point of breakout areas. Like our boardroom tables, Koskela can facilitate the creation of an original breakout table that is only limited by your imagination. Or you can customise one of Koskela standard tables to suit.

Screens

In recent years, bespoke screens have become a popular solution for delineating spaces. Whether loose or fixed to the ground, screens not only offer privacy, but utility such as with a whiteboard or pinboard screen, or ambience such as with a plant screen.

Banquette seating

Built in banquette seating is a failsafe solution to maximise space, especially when power and data is integrated. Koskela can create banquette seating with a high level of finish for beautifully resolved spaces.
