How to choose the perfect rug for your space

Rugs have a transformative power to create a sense of warmth, comfort and style to your home, but choosing the right rug for your space can be a challenge. To help ease the selection process we’ve asked our amazing Interior Consult team for advice on how to choose the perfect rug for your home.

What’s the first thing you should consider when selecting a rug for your home?

Size - Make sure you get the right size because the wrong size rug can really affect the look and feel of your room, and not in a good way. A great tip is to measure, then map out the area with some tape. Or if you book a consultation with one of our fabulous interior stylists, they will be able to put it into a floor plan for you so you can be sure to get the right fit.

To help you sift through the right size rug you can shop by small rugs, medium rugs, large rugs and runners. We've also put together a handy guide on how to style each size in your space for our Cold Picnic Rug and Tantuvi Rug ranges.

What are your top tips for styling rugs in different rooms of the home: (and does this change for apartments?)

Whether living in an apartment, house or castle, the rules of rugs are the same, you just scale to suit your space. A big rug in a small room will actually make it feel spacious and a small room with a small rug can have the opposite effect.

Tips for styling rugs in your living room

Ideally, all your furniture legs will be on the rug but at the very least, the two front legs of your furniture should sit on the rug — such as the front legs of your sofa.

Tips for styling rugs in your dining room

We’d suggest you stay away from flat or light-coloured rugs here or go for a hardy weave like our Tantuvi rugs.

Rule of thumb for a rug under a dining table is that the rug needs to be big enough to fit your dining chair legs — even when they‘re pulled out from the table, otherwise you’ll create a trip hazard.

Tips for styling rugs in your bedroom

With many homes opting out of carpet in the bedroom these days and going for gorgeous timber flooring, a big rug in the bedroom will have your boudoir feeling cosy and grown up.

If you decide you don’t want to splurge on a huge rug that will allow enough space for walking on around the bed then make sure at least the two legs at the foot of your bed are on the rug.

Tips for styling rugs in your hallway rugs or runner rugs

Not everyone is lucky enough to have a grand hallway, but even still a bit of floor candy in this space can really add some wow factor, and it is usually the first place your guests step into.

Whether you style with a modern, fresh burst of colour with Rrres or Lagos Del Mundo or go for eclectic charm with a Vintage Loom rug sourced from Turkey, our interior consultants can help you find the perfect runner

What are the best ways to style a rug to give a space vibrancy/texture/warmth?

At Koskela, we like to think of rugs as art for your floor.

A great styling tip is to choose a colour in your rug and repeat it in something else such as an artwork, a sofa fabric, cushion, or vase. The best kinds of rooms are the ones that tell a story, even if it’s just a visual one.

Can you style rugs on carpet? And if so, do certain materials work better than others?

You can absolutely layer rugs over carpet. This is especially important if you are renting and your landlord refuses to replace that circa 1973 brown pile. The same rules apply here for size as without carpet.

How can you nail a rug layering look?

Eclectic, boho, or just a modern quirk, laying rugs can make a room feel more interesting. Try connecting rugs with a theme, such as the same material but different colours or patterns or all kilims but in different sizes and designs. Let your creativity run wild.

If you each had to describe your design style as a rug, what kind of rug would you be?

Without a doubt, a Tantuvi. These hard wearing hemp rugs with delicious, flexible colour pallets are down to earth and fun to be around! - Harriet

The Rrres rugs use a mix of traditional and contemporary techniques to weave their bright, shapely designs which resonates with my own style. I find their compelling use of symmetrical and asymmetrical patterns beautiful and interesting. Due to the handmade nature of the rugs, you can find small imperfections making each one beautiful and unique in it's own way, just like me!  -  Kyah

Looms vintage rugs, sourced from eastern Europe, pre loved and unique definitely lend to my design style. Being well travelled (and a good vintage myself), with a strong sustainability edge, I love imagining up the lives these beautiful rugs must have had and feel they bring this element of magic to a home. - Marnee
