Introducing Our New Sustainable Denim Fabric, in Collaboration with The New Denim Project

Koskela is excited to unveil our latest
collaboration with The New Denim Project, a third-generation, family-owned
textile company founded in Guatemala in 1956. Known for their ethical and
visionary approach to textile production, The New Denim Project shares our
commitment to sustainability, creating fabrics that are as kind to the planet
as they are to your home.

Their mission is simple: to design textiles
that are economical, efficient, and have the least possible environmental
impact. The New Denim Project’s innovative process ensures that their products
circulate within society for as long as possible, minimising waste, conserving
water and energy, and using resources in the most sustainable way.

The Process Behind the Fabric

The denim fabric is made from post-industrial
waste collected from local garment factories in Guatemala. These discarded
materials are sorted and ground into fiber, which is then spun into new yarns
and woven into fabric. This upcycling process is chemical-free, dye-free, and
contains no synthetic fibers (such as polyester or nylon). The result is a
fabric that’s 100% natural, fully compostable, and completely sustainable.

A Circular System in Action

At Koskela, we believe in the power of
circularity, and so does The New Denim Project. The leftover cottonseed and
cotton lint from the upcycling process are not discarded, but instead, they’re
given a second life as compost for coffee-growers at Finca San Jeronimo Miramar
in the highlands of Guatemala. This closed-loop system ensures that no waste
goes to landfills, and the leftover materials enrich the soil to cultivate
specialty coffee — furthering our commitment to sustainability by creating a
valuable resource that supports both people and the environment.
