Koskela has saved an entire hectare of Daintree Rainforest!

By supporting Rainforest Rescue and their ‘Buy Back and Protect Forever’ project we are conserving the Daintree Rainforest for future generations.

Koskela has partnered with non-profit organization Rainforest Rescue for over 10 years now. Koskela was founded with a mission to limit our impact on the environment and we believe the critical work they do for the Daintree rainforest is well worth contributing to.

Rainforest Rescue has a vision to buy back and protect all remaining high conservation value properties in the Daintree lowland rainforest by 2030.

Many people assumed that the creation of the Daintree National Park and subsequent World Heritage Listing in 1988 would secure the unique environment of the Daintree rainforest. However in the early 1980s, the Queensland government sold large lots of land to private owners in the heart of the Daintree lowland rainforest. This land has amazing biodiversity and conservation value but cannot be protected under the law.

Rainforest Rescue raises funds to buy back the land at risk of development and secures Nature Refuge Status, which protects the property forever under covenants ratified by the Queensland Government. As of mid-2017, Koskela’s contributions have saved an entire hectare of Daintree lowland rainforest. In addition, we funded the replanting of thousands of trees to regenerate damaged rainforest.

We are so happy to be able to help conserve this small but significant slice Australia. It’s especially exciting to receive reports from Rainforest Rescue that endangered native wildlife – such as the Southern Cassowary and Boyd’s Forest Dragon – are once again flourishing in the area.

In total, 31 threatened properties have been saved but there are still 149 properties to buy back. As such, Koskela has signed a new Memorandum of Understanding with Rainforest Rescue to acquire a second hectare by 2020. We are committed to keeping this unique and beautiful place intact for generations to come.
