Urchin by Jimmy K Thaiday.

This T-shirt is a design from the Erub Erwer Meta (Darnley Island Arts Centre) and is part of the Nganana / Koskela: Art Centre T-shirt Collab.

“I was born in Cairns and grew up on Erub (Darnley Island) in the Eastern Torres Strait. My Tribal clan is Peiudu, one of four tribes on Erub. Art has always been part of my life, it is something I like doing and expressing myself through. My inspiration for my artwork is from the lifestyle that I live and the cultural traditions taught to us and that have been passed on through generations. My family has always encouraged my art practice giving me confidence and motivation to keep developing my ideas and techniques.” - Jimmy Thaiday.

This design arose from a watercolour workshop where the Erub Arts artists discussed the reef and ocean and what that means to them.

Erub Erwer Meta (Darnley Island Arts Centre) works to revitalise traditional Erubam le and share it with the world. Erub, also known as Darnley Island, is one of the most remote communities in Australia, located 160km north east of Queensland’s Cape York Peninsula. This beautiful volcanic island situated in deep turquoise waters, on the edge of the Great Barrier Reef is home to approximately 400 Erubam people.
