About this product

The Kulama Ceremony is performed in the late wet season (March-April) when a ring appears around the moon. Kulama is a traditional initiation for young men which coincides with the harvest of a certain wild yam species. Elders of both sexes sing and dance for three days welcoming the boys into adulthood. The boy is then renamed with his true man's name.

Jilamara Arts & Crafts Association is an indigenous owned art centre located in Milikapiti on Melville Island, which is one of the Tiwi Islands, 80 km to the north of Darwin. Artists at the centre have made a significant contribution to contemporary indigenous art in Australia since the association was established in 1989.

Conrad Tipungwuti has been painting and creating prints at Jilamara since the late 1990’s, he now lives with aged care on Bathurst Island. He has matured as an artist and developed a practice which displays unique characteristics – his work is full of expression and has a freshness and energy. His work embodies the sheer enjoyment of the very act of painting.

As with all artists from Jilamara Art Centre Conrad paints with natural ochres which are collected from around the community.
