“It remains there when the sea kicks up, when the clouds roll in, and becomes more conspicuous in absence, when the fog closes over. It is the constant. With this series, Gone To Earth, Celestino finds himself returning to the same vantage point repeatedly over the course of a year, exploring the equal bodies of sky and water and where they intersect. The result is a body of work as much a work of ritual as it is a landscape series. For one who lives close to sea, the ocean takes on a greater weight, the proximity allowing a register of the nuances of tide, wind, and light, always in a state of flux.
It is amongst these elements, captured in their ever-changing halves, that the beauty of this work resides. Through the sheer size of the work and the simplicity of their reductive composition, attention is concentrated on the repetition, on the return to site, on to what a day can bring.”
